Prophet Hud — The Messenger to the ʿAd People

🌿🕊️ Introduction

Prophet Hud was sent by Allah to the people of ʿAd, a powerful and prosperous nation known for their grand buildings and physical strength. Despite these blessings, they were arrogant, prideful, and engaged in idol worship.

Allah sent Hud to call them back to the worship of Allah alone, to follow divine guidance, and to abandon all forms of idolatry.

“Hud said to his people, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not fear Him?’” — Qur’an 11:50

Hud’s story illustrates the dangers of pride and disobedience, and also highlights Allah’s mercy for those who repent and turn back to Him.

📢☝️ Hud’s Call to the ʿAd People

Hud addressed his people directly, warning them of Allah’s punishment if they persisted in disbelief and corruption.

“O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Do not reduce your blessings, and do not commit corruption on the earth.” — Qur’an 11:61

He reminded them that their wealth, strength, and impressive buildings were gifts from Allah, not evidence of divinity or superiority.

“Do not turn your backs on the command of Allah, for you have been given might and power.” — Qur’an 11:59

Despite Hud’s sincere warnings, the ʿAd people mocked him, insisting that he was like themselves and refusing to abandon their idols.

“They said, ‘O Hud, you have come to us with clear evidence, yet you say what our fathers did not follow.’” — Qur’an 11:51

❌ The Arrogance and Rejection of the ʿAd People

The people of ʿAd were proud of their material wealth, fortresses, and physical power. They believed no one could challenge them or punish them for their corruption.

“And they denied him and said, ‘We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent.’” — Qur’an 11:52

Their arrogance led them to reject Hud’s repeated warnings. They mocked his message, accused him of falsehood, and continued in their idol worship.

“They said, ‘O Hud, you have been sent only as one like ourselves, and we do not see you as any different.’” — Qur’an 11:51

⏳ Hud’s Warning and Patience

Hud continued to plead with his people to reflect, repent, and obey Allah. He emphasised that only Allah could protect them from destruction.

“O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord; then repent to Him. He will send the sky upon you in showers and increase your strength.” — Qur’an 11:52

Although Hud was a human like them, his connection with Allah granted him the wisdom and courage to continue his mission without fear or compromise.

“And Hud said, ‘I am not asking you for any reward for it; my reward is only from Allah.’” — Qur’an 11:50

⚡ The Punishment of the ʿAd People

Despite Hud’s patient guidance, the majority of the ʿAd people persisted in arrogance and disobedience. Allah decreed a severe punishment for the nation.

“Then We sent upon them a furious wind on a day of continuous misfortune, striking with violence wherever it reached.” — Qur’an 69:6-7

The once-powerful ʿAd civilisation was destroyed, leaving only Hud and the believers safe from the calamity.

“Except the followers of Hud. We saved them by mercy from Us. And We eliminated the others completely.” — Qur’an 11:58

📖🕋 Hud as a Prophet and Example of Patience

Hud is remembered in the Qur’an as a model of patience and steadfastness. He called his people repeatedly with wisdom and trust in Allah, even when faced with mockery and rejection.

“And We sent Hud to his people. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not fear Him?’” — Qur’an 11:50

Hud’s life teaches believers about the importance of warning others with wisdom, remaining steadfast in faith, and trusting Allah’s plan for justice and mercy.
